Sermon: "Life Under the Good Shepherd's Care"

John 10:1-18

Focus Verse: "The thief does not come except to steal,

and to kill, and to destroy. I have come that they may have life,

and that they may have it more abundantly." John 10:10

--------------------------

"The LORD is my shepherd; I shall not want.

He makes me to lie down in green pastures;

He leads me beside the still waters.

He restores my soul;

He leads me in the paths of righteousness

for His name's sake.

Yea, though I walk through the valley

of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil;

for You are with me; Your rod and Your staff,

they comfort me.

You prepare a table before me in the

presence of my enemies;

You anoint my head with oil;

my cup runs over.

Surely goodness and mercy shall

follow me all the days of my life;

and I will dwell in the house of the LORD

forever."

Psalm 23:1-6

Life Under the Good Shepherd's Care

   "He will feed His flock like a shepherd;

He will gather the lambs with His arm,

and carry them in His bosom,

and gently lead those who are with young."

Isaiah 40:11

"Know that the LORD, He is God;

It is He who has made us,

and not we ourselves;

We are His people and the sheep

of His pasture."

Psalm 100:3

"Oh, come let us worship and bow down;

Let us kneel before the LORD our Maker.

For He is our God, and we are

the people of His pasture, and

the sheep of His hand."

Psalm 95:6-7

Life Under the Good Shepherd's Care

"For thus says the LORD God: 'Indeed I Myself

will search for My sheep and seek them out.

As a shepherd seeks out his flock on the day

  he is among his scattered sheep, so will I seek

 out My sheep and deliver them from all the places

where they were scattered on a cloudy and

dark day.' " Ezekiel 34:11-12

 " 'I will feed My flock, and I will make

them lie down, ' says the LORD God. ' I will seek

what was lost and bring back what was driven

away, bind up the broken and strengthen what

was sick; but I will destroy the fat and the

strong, and feed them in judgment.' "

Ezekiel 34:15-16

" 'You are My flock, the flock of My pasture;

you are men, and I am your God,' says

the LORD God." Ezekiel 34:31

Life Under the Good Shepherd's Care

"So He spoke this parable to them, saying:

 'What man of you, having a hundred sheep,

 if he loses one of them, does not leave the

ninety-nine in the wilderness, and go after

the one which is lost until he finds it?

And when he has found it, he lays it on

his shoulders, rejoicing. And when he

comes home, he calls together his friends

and neighbors, saying to them,

'Rejoice with me, for I have found my sheep

which was lost!' I say to you that likewise

there will be more joy in heaven over one

sinner who repents than over ninety-nine

just persons who need no repentance.' "

Luke 15:3-7

A Faith Journey

"But God, who is rich in mercy, because of His

great love with which He loved us, even when

we were dead in trespasses, made us alive

together with Christ (by grace you have been

saved), and raised us up together, and

made us sit together in the heavenly places

in Christ Jesus, that in the ages to come

He might show the exceeding riches of

His grace in His kindness toward us in

Christ Jesus. For by grace you have been

saved through faith, and that not of yourselves;

it is the gift of God, not of works, lest anyone

should boast." Ephesians 2:4-9

The Apostle Paul in speaking of the
faith of Abraham writes:

"... and the father of circumcision to those who not only

are of the circumcision, but who also walk in

the steps of the faith which our father Abraham had

while still uncircumcised. For the promise that he

would be the heir of the world was not to Abraham

or to his seed through the law, but through the

righteousness of faith." Romans 4:12-13

Also,

"He did not waver at the promise of God

through unbelief, but was strengthened in faith,

giving glory to God, and being fully convinced

that what He had promised He was also able

to perform." Romans 4:20-21

A Faith Journey (continued)

"By faith Enoch was taken away so that

  he did not see death, 'and was not found,

because God had taken him'; for before

he was taken he had this testimony,

that he pleased God.

But without faith it is impossible

to please Him, for he who comes to God

must believe that He is, and that He is

a rewarder of those who diligently

seek Him.

By faith Noah, being divinely warned of

things not yet seen, moved with godly fear,

prepared an ark for the saving of his

household, by which he condemned the world

and became heir of the righteousness which

is according to faith."

Hebrews 11:5-7

   "These all died in faith, not having received

the promises, but having seen them afar

off were assured of them, embraced them

   and confessed that they were strangers

and pilgrims on the earth. For those who

say such things declare plainly that they

seek a homeland.

And truly if they had called to mind

that country from which they had come

out, they would have had opportunity

to return. But now they desire a better,

     that is, a heavenly country. Therefore

God is not ashamed to be called their

God, for He has prepared a city for them."

Hebrews 11:13-16

A Faith Journey (continued)

 "By faith Moses, when he was born, was hidden

for three months by his parents, because they

saw that the child was beautiful,

and they were not afraid of the king's edict.

By faith Moses, when he was grown up,

refused to be called the son of Pharaoh's

daughter, choosing rather to be mistreated

with the people of God than to enjoy the

fleeting pleasures of sin. He considered the

reproach of Christ greater wealth than the

treasures of Egypt, for he was looking to

the reward. By faith he left Egypt, not

being afraid of the anger of the king, for

he endured as seeing him who is invisible.

By  faith he kept the Passover and sprinkled

the blood, so that the Destroyer of the

firstborn might not touch them."

Hebrews 11:23-28

"Not Me, but Almighty God"

(It is not my age, my knowledge,

my abilities, ..... but faith in

the Almighty God.)

Genesis 17:1-22

Abraham laughed at the amazing promises

of God -- that Almighty God would bless

him and Sarah at their age, and in this way!

Not Me, but Almighty God:

"Let no one despise your youth, but

be an example to the believers in word,

in conduct, in love, in spirit, in faith,

in purity. Till I come, give attention to

reading, to exhortation, to doctrine.

Do not neglect the gift that is in you,

which was given to you by prophecy

with the laying on of the hands of the

eldership. Meditate on these things;

give yourself entirely to them, that your

progress may be evident to all."

1 Timothy 4:12-15

Not Me, But  Almighty God (continued)

"So it was, when they came, that

he (Samuel the prophet) looked at Eliab

and said, 'Surely the LORD's anointed

is before Him!' But the LORD said to Samuel,

'Do not look at his appearance or at his physical

stature, because I have refused him. For the

LORD does not see as man sees; for man

looks at the outward appearance, but the

LORD looks at the heart.' "

1 Samuel 16:6-7
